Your Child's Sportswear Is Plastic.
7 Things Nobody Tells You.
Most parents read the label for the size. Nobody tells them to read it for plastic and toxins.
Explore Svante Natural Sets
Pick up a pair of kids' sports leggings or shorts from any of the big names. You're almost certainly holding polyester. You'll find the odd cotton legging in general kidswear if you hunt for it. In proper performance sportswear, natural barely exists.
Polyester isn't really a fabric. It's plastic, spun into thread and woven into clothes. The same material as plastic bottles.
The label has to tell you the fabric. It doesn't have to tell you what that fabric is treated with. The chemical finishes do not have to be mentioned.
So millions of kids train, play and sweat in plastic for hours every week. Chemicals leaching into their skin. The label never says a word.
A child at rest is one thing. A child running, jumping and sweating is another. The skin gets hot and pores open.
That's the worst possible moment to be wrapped in plastic.
Synthetic fabrics shed microplastics when they're worn. Heat, sweat and friction speed up microplastic release. Movement and sport do exactly this.
Synthetic fabrics, dyes and chemical finishes are known triggers for irritation, rashes and eczema flare-ups. On a hot, sweaty child, it can be worse.
This isn't a future worry. It's fast becoming one of the exposures parents are most concerned about.
If you've started checking labels for natural fibres, you're already ahead of most parents. But there's a gap the label is allowed to leave.
A brand can say "made with 100% organic cotton" and still build the garment from polyester, spandex or nylon. The whole trick is the word "with." The cotton is organic. The rest doesn't have to be.
"I've been duped multiple times now. A company will say 'made with 100% organic cotton.' The keyword here is 'with.' They're saying that the cotton they use is organic but then still add in polyester, spandex, nylon, whatever."
It goes further. GOTS, the standard most people treat as the gold standard, still allows a portion of synthetic fibre in the blend. A GOTS label doesn't guarantee polyester-free. It guarantees the organic part meets the standard.
And even a 100% cotton, GOTS-certified garment can still carry toxic dyes or chemical finishes like anti-crease treatments. The certification covers what the fabric is made from. Not what gets done to it afterwards.
The label tells you the legal minimum. It was never designed to tell you about health risks.
One certification cuts through most of the label noise. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished garment. The actual item your child will wear, not just the raw fabric before it gets treated. It tests for banned dyes, pesticide residues, heavy metals, formaldehyde, PFAS and phthalates.
For organic cotton specifically, GOTS sets strict rules on the fibre, the dyes and the finishes.
But here is what the labels never tell you. A certification only means something if the brand uses it on everything they make. A brand can certify one product and leave another untested. Certification on the fabric doesn't automatically cover the dyes. It doesn't cover the finishes.
The only real protection is a brand that tells you exactly which certification covers which part of what you're buying. That level of transparency barely exists in children's sportswear.
It is the reason Svante was built.
Most parents don't question polyester sportswear for one reason. Decades of marketing convinced them it was fine. Convinced them that natural fibres can't perform. That cotton won't wick. That plant-based fabric won't survive real sport.
That isn't science. It's economics. Polyester is far cheaper to produce than natural performance fabric. The industry didn't choose it because it's better for your child. It chose it because it's better for profits.
Engineer a natural fabric properly for kids' activewear. Breathable, moisture-wicking, hard-wearing and it does everything polyester pretends to do. Without the plastic and toxic load.
One UK brand built its whole range on exactly that standard. Zero polyester anywhere. OEKO-TEX and GOTS on every fabric and every dye.
Svante's Plantech™ fabric is 92% TENCEL™ Lyocell and 8% Bio-Elastane: breathable, naturally moisture-wicking, free from microplastics and chemical finishes, built for children. MeshFlex™ is 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell, fully natural. The dyes are water-based. Logos are printed in natural silicone, PVC-free.
"It's difficult to find quality material in this polyester and plastic world."
It is difficult. It is no longer impossible.
Zero polyester. Every item. Both certifications. No exceptions.

The fear about switching is reasonable. That your child will find it uncomfortable, overheat or complain. That the set ends up at the back of the drawer and you go back to plastic.
That fear comes from real experiences with brands that tried natural performance and got it wrong. Itchy, heavy cotton. Fabric that felt nothing like the label said. Those were failures of execution, not proof that natural can't perform.
Any parent knows fit and comfort is what matters to kids. A child who finds activewear uncomfortable won't wear it. Svante's Plantech™ and MeshFlex™ were engineered around exactly that. They move, breathe, naturally wick and hold their shape. Comfort isn't the trade-off. It's the starting point.
If you've already cut synthetic chemicals out of your family's food, cleaning and skincare, you know how that effort adds up. Most parents accept they can't do everything, so they prioritise. Food first. Skincare second.
Activewear never made the list. Not because it doesn't matter. Because nobody told you it belonged there.
Here's what makes this swap different from the others. It's finishable. A child owns a handful of activewear sets, crop tops, leggings, shorts, tees, joggers. One decision, one brand, and the swap is done. No years of testing replacements like the food shift takes. You replace the polyester, you remove the exposure, and that's it.
Svante produces in small, responsibly made batches, so stock is genuinely limited. When a size or colour sells out, it takes time to come back. That isn't a tactic. It's how a brand taking on the toxic sportswear industry and refusing petrochemical materials works.
If your child is in activewear this week, the odds are it's plastic and the exposure is ongoing. The switch is a single decision. The only question is when you make it.

Jen, Founder of Svante
"As parents, we were shocked to find out what most children's activewear is actually made of. Synthetic fabrics, full of microplastics, sitting against our kids' skin all day. We knew there had to be a better way. So I set out to make sportswear that performs like the big brands but is made from natural, healthy materials. I built Svante for our kids first. Now I'm sharing it with yours."

Svante does not manufacture at the scale of Nike or Adidas. That is deliberate. Small batches. Certified materials. No waste.
When a size sells out, it takes time to come back. Restocks are not quick or guaranteed.
If your child is in activewear this week, the exposure is ongoing. It doesn't pause while you decide. This is one purchase decision. The only question is when you make it.
